Synopsis

MICHAEL X is a feature documentary that will highlight the extraordinary life and death of one of the most controversial, charismatic figures of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Award winning director, writer and actor Clint Dyer, will co-direct with Gabriel Clarke and joins the successful team behind Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans, that was in Official Selection at Cannes’15.

The film will be produced by Noah Media’s Victoria Barrell and John McKenna. Dog & Duck Films, the team behind archive-led documentaries such as Amy & Senna, will be the Archive Producers on the film. Lawyers from The Death Penalty Project, a world renowned legal action charity based in London, will sift through new evidence to determine if the hanging of Michael X was a miscarriage of justice.

Michael X was a Black Power leader who fought for racial equality in Britain helping establish the Notting Hill Carnival and The London Free School. He counted John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Muhammad Ali, Mick Jagger, Leonard Cohen and Pink Floyd among his friends and advocates.

To his allies Michael X was a poet, a writer, a father and a revolutionary. To his enemies he was a pimp, hustler, drug dealing enforcer and convicted murderer.

Like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, his friend and confidant from America, Michael X died an early and controversial death. Hung by the neck for a crime that many believe he did not commit, his execution was sanctioned by the British Government 10 years after Great Britain had abolished the Death Penalty.

Forty years later his incredible story, wrapped up in conspiracy theories, reads like a thriller. An archive treasure trove of unseen footage and original filming including the first ever interviews with Michael’s daughters will drive a narrative based in the London of the swinging 60s and set to a soundtrack that inspired a generation.

Leader, Revolutionary, Imposter… Murderer? At last, the true story of Michael X is about to be told …
